Do Not Flush Rules

Simple Septic System Tips

Caring for your home septic system doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, if you follow a few simple maintenance tips, you can save a lot of trouble and expense.

4 Key Elements To Maintenance

Regular Pumping & Inspections

Prevent solids from reaching the drainage field by pumping on the correct schedule for your home’s septic tank.

The exact pumping maintenance schedule and the condition of the septic system are both determined during our 7-point inspection which is free when you pump your tank.

Water Management

Septic systems are designed to only handle a certain amount of water per day.

Showers daily are mandatory ... for most, but when it comes to laundry, just try not to do the whole house in one day.

(Equation: 110 x ‘number of bedrooms’ = gallons per day)

Proper Waste Disposal

Remember, there are living organisms in your septic tank digesting the waste and what you flush down the toilet or pour down the sink can kill the helpful bacteria.

Maximize your system's lifespan by minimizing the harmful chemicals that are poured into the system.

Dispose of NOTHING non-biodegradable and DO NOT use the garbage disposal unless you plan to pump the septic tank yearly.

Drain Field Maintenance

Preventing the soil absorption system from clogging is the most important part of maintaining a septic system. ($20,000 or more to replace.)

Septic tank pumping on the right schedule is crucial and when a system gets older, further treatment may be required to extend the lifespan, but do not replace your septic system until you call us.

To Do

  • Use water efficiently to avoid overloading the septic system.
  • Be sure to repair leaky faucets or toilets.
  • If you have garbage disposal unit use it very sparingly or pump your septic tank more often because this waste does not get broken down in the septic tank.
  • Use commercial bathroom cleaners and laundry detergents in moderation. To prevent the killing of bacteria in the septic tank clean your toilets, sinks, and showers with mild detergent or baking soda which will not harm your tank.
  • Keep records of repairs, pumping, inspections, permits issued, and any other system maintenance activities.
  • Learn the location of your septic tank. This is important to know because if you park vehicles on any part of your septic system it can compact the soil in your drainfeild or damage the pipes, tank, or other septic system components.
  • Have septic system inspected by a licensed inspector to learn the condition of your system.
  • Plant only grass over and near your septic system. Roots from nearby trees or shrubs might clog and damage drainfeild.
